Quick Start
Watch the Dupin Quick Start video online.
Here's a basic rundown of how to use Dupin. Dupin is quite flexible so be sure to try all the various settings and options.
1) Choose the Master Library Playlist or Playlist to be searched for duplicates from the Playlist Popup:
In most cases you'll probably want to choose the "Music" library playlist so that Dupin looks for duplicates among all your music tracks.
Selecting a library or playlist:
- The Playlist Popup displays playlists in pretty much the same order they are displayed in iTunes.
- The very first Playlist displayed in the Playlist Popup will represent your entire librarymusic, movies, audiobooks, podcasts, and so on. It may be named "Library", or, if you are using iTunes multiple library feature, it will be the name of the currently loaded library.
- For more detailed information, see Using the Playlist Popup.
2) Select the Criteria that Dupin will use to determine track "duplicateness" by checking or un-checking the items in the Criteria Matrix:
Choosing Criteria:
- Remember: Only tracks that have matching data in the tags checked in the Criteria matrix will be considered duplicates. Data in other tags will be ignored.
- Later, if you don't like the results you can re-set the settings in the Criteria matrix and try again.
- For more detailed information, see Using the Criteria Matrix.
3) Get Duplicates
Select the "Get Duplicates" command from the File menuor press Command-G or use the "Get Dupes" toolbar iconto initiate the search for duplicates in the chosen Playlist. In a few moments, duplicates will be displayed in Dupin
For more detailed information, see How to Get Dupes.
4) Filter Controls
The Filter Controls determine which single track in a Dupe Group (that is, a set of duplicate tracks) should be the "Keeper". Select the "Filter..." command from the File menuor press Command-F or use the "Filter" toolbar iconto display the Filter Controls window.
Filter Controls Window:
- Set the Filter Controls options you require for filtering.
- Click the "Filter" button.
- In a few moments, any tracks in a Dupe Group not matching your Filter Control Settings will be marked as a non-Keeper.
- Filter Controls can be re-set and the Dupe Groups can be re-filtered any time.
For more detailed information, see Using the Filter Controls.
Note: By default Keepers are designated by being checkmarked. However, if you prefer the opposite configuration whereby a Keeper is designated by being un-checkmarked, you can toggle this behavior in Preferences. In any case, the text color of non-Keepers is always lighter than the text color of the Keepers. Throughout this help book, tracks will be referred to as Keepers and non-Keepers as often as possible to avoid any confusion with what is "checked" or "un-checked".
5) Purge, Dry Run, and Other Options
Once the Dupe Groups are filtered these Tools are available:
The Purge and Purge (Dry Run) Tools:
- Purge will delete the non-Keeper Dupin tracks from iTunes and optionally move their files to the Trash.
- Purge (Dry Run) will perform the same tasks set by Purge except that no tracks or files will be moved or deleted. Instead, a text file will be created listing what would have occurred to tracks during an actual Purge.
- iCloud Music Library tracks require special consideration. See the section on iCloud Music Library.
- For more detailed information, see Using the Purge and Purge (Dry Run) Tools.
Selection Window:
- Work with smaller groups of tracks in batches, rather than every Dupin track at once, for more precision and speed.
- For more detailed information, see Using the Selection Window.
Consolidate History Tool:
- Consolidate the play, skip, and rating information from all the tracks in the Dupe Group to the single Keeper track.
- For more detailed information, see Using the Consolidate History Tool.
Re-Playlist Tool:
- Re-populate iTunes playlists replacing non-Keeper tracks with the designated Keepers.
- For more detailed information, see Using the Re-Playlist Tool.
