Device Status

The things you can and cannot do with (and to) the device depend on the device status.
The button on the left shows the device's status as detected and interpreted by iFuntastic.
You can click it to update the status - it will be one of the above.
The 'Setup & Troubleshooting' page provides more detailed status information.

Unreachable
iFuntastic cannot communicate with the device. The device is not connected, not charged, switched off or broken. Or the connector is loose or the USB port or cable is broken. You should check all of that. Go to the 'Utilities & Troubleshooting' page to replug, restart or restore the device.

Shackled
The normal, untouched state of the device. 'Shackled' is the opposite of 'Unshackled' - and 'Unshackled' is what I call a device that has been modified to allow access to its file system. This, to keep it distinct from 'unlocking' (from a carrier,) and to pay homage to the original 'jailbreak' tool.
So, 'unshackled' means 'jailbroken' and modifiable, but not unlocked.

Surprisingly, you can do a few nifty things even with a shackled device: Go to the 'Jailbreak (Unshackle)' page to unshackle the device.

Unshackled
In this state, you (and iFuntastic) have gained access to the device's file system.
The device is now wide open; in addition to the options for the shackled state you can now use the File Manager and Ready 4 iFun!
You can install iFuntastic support on the 'iFuntastic Support' page. This will install files and abilities needed to support additional functionality. When installed, you can Recovery Mode
This is a special mode that is used to restore the device in iTunes. The device screen usually displays the 'Connect to iTunes' image. You can get out of recovery mode either by restoring, or by shutting the device off and restarting it.

DFU Mode
DFU stands for 'Device Firmware Update' and is a special kind of recovery mode.
DFU mode will cause iTunes (when launched or open) to ask you to restore the device.
You can exit this mode only by restoring the device in iTunes.

How to enter DFU Mode manually:
hold down both the 'Sleep/Wake' and 'Home' buttons until the screen goes black (about 10 seconds,) then let go of 'Sleep/Wake' and keep holding the 'Home' button until iFuntastic shows the status as 'DFU Mode' (or iTunes, if running, detects the device.)

Entering this mode is tricky and may take several tries. You can get assistance on the Utilities & Troubleshooting page (and tab.) iFuntastic will prompt you with sounds when the device mode changes.

Busy
When iFuntastic reads files from the device, or writes files to it, the status indicator switches to 'busy'. Although the UI is usually responsive, you should wait until iFuntastic is done with whatever it is doing. There is an 'Abort ongoing Operations' option on the 'Setup & Troubleshooting' page, if you absolutely need to interrupt. All the way on the bottom of the window is a small line of text that gives more information about what iFuntastic is doing. It normally shows '...'; again, if that line shows any other text, please wait.

Update iFun Support
This indicates that you are using a newer version of iFuntastic. From time to time it is necessary to update or add iFuntastic's support files on the device. At the very least, the file indicating which version is installed needs to be updated. Go to the 'iFuntastic Support' page to update.
