Syncing A 'Sync' with iTunes will reset the Custom list of ringtones that the iPhone 'sees'. Your ringtones are still on the phone. It may also add duplicate ringtones. Click 'Update' to remove duplicates and fix the list. If the ringtones don't show up on the phone, then you may have invalid characters in the 'name' or 'artist' fields of the ringtone files. In that case, you should change these fields in the original files, then go to the 'Custom Ringtones' in the File Manager, delete all files in that folder, and then add your ringtones again. The SpringBoard (or the iPhone) needs to be restarted before you can use the ringtones (instead of 'Marimba' playing.) This is done automatically when iFuntastic Support is installed. Ringtones on Disk Drag sound files into the 'Ringtones on Disk' list. Files can be in wav, mp3, m4a or aif format. When adding a ringtone to the phone the sound will be converted to m4a (AAC) format when necessary. The .m4a file will be put into the disk folder as well. Therefore you may have duplicate files in different formats, but only the .m4a file will be shown. Click on the speaker to play a sound, or on the delete icon ( ![]() Click in the left column to mark a sound for transfer to the iPhone ( ![]() Click on the scissors to crop a sound into a ringtone (see below.) Ringtones in iTunes iTunes throws us quite a few curveballs with its ringtone management. First: when you switch ringtone syncing off, then iTunes deletes all ringtone files from the phone. So leave ringtone syncing on. Second: iTunes syncs only ringtones that are around 30s in length, even though they will show up in your ringtones playlist! Third: when syncing, iTunes updates the ringtone list that the phone uses, to include only the ones in the iTunes playlist (however, it leaves the files on the phone.) To help with that, iFuntastic adds each ringtone to the phone and to iTunes. If the sound is already in iTunes, then iTunes won't add it - iFuntastic makes the sound unique so that it does get added - but unfortunately that means that it will be duplicated on the phone by iTunes when you 'Sync' again. Clicking 'Update' in iFuntastic after a 'Sync' will remove the duplicates and repair the list. As you can see, things are not all that easy - please have some tolerance when things don't quite work as expected... Ringtones on the iPhone There are two ringtone lists, described below. Toggle between the Custom list and the Standard list by clicking on the button above the list. Custom Ringtones This list shows the ringtones you added. Click in the left column to mark a sound for deletion from the phone ( ![]() Click on the name to edit it. Standard Ringtones This list shows the standard ringtones on the iPhone. These ringtones have the pleasant characteristics of playing for sure and being unaffected by 'Sync'ing. A drawback is that the Standard area is limited in size, so don't go overboard. Click in the left column to mark a sound for deletion from the phone ( ![]() Click on the name to edit it. Click on the 'Update iPhone' button between the lists to apply all changes (adding/deleting/renaming.) If the badge on the 'Update' button is red, this function (and saving ringtone edits) will be disabled. Please consider purchasing unlimited use to support my continued efforts. Click on 'Refresh' to update both lists. Ringtone Editing Click on the scissors to transfer a sound into the editor. The top slider shows the whole sound (which could be longish) with a 'ringtone window' from 15s to 60s in duration. You can increase or decrease this initial duration with the + or - buttons. Drag the 'window' along the slider to pick the section of the sound that you want to make into a ringtone. The sound will play as long as you hold down the mouse - this allows you to 'scrub' through the sound. The rough draft of your ringtone will be enlarged and displayed in the bottom slider. Drag the start- and endpoints to fine tune it. While the mouse is down, a small section will play repeatedly to help you find the desired position. You can also set the start- and endpoints entirely 'by ear' - click on the left or the right ear and hold down. The respective point will be set as soon as you release the mouse. Click 'Prelisten' (you're not really viewing it, are you) to hear the ringtone as it will be saved, and click 'Save...' to do so. The ringtone will be saved to the 'Ringtones on Disk' folder in .aif format (which means you can use it as a system sound, too!) Set the fade in and fade out duration with the respective sliders and decrease or increase the volume with the Volume Adjustment slider. 10 is the unchanged volume; you can crank it to 11 :-) but listen to the sound - it may become distorted. Click 'Prelisten' to check the fading and volume adjustment. Default Ringtone Select a ringtone from the popup list (if enabled) and it will be set (immediately) as the default ringtone. Ring and Vibrate Click the checkbox on or off to change the setting immediately. iTunes Playlists You can select a playlist from the 'Copy Playlist' menu which lists your iTunes playlists, and all of its contents will be copied to your disk folder. Select 'Update' from the popup menu to rebuild the list of playlists. |
